They say never follow the will-o'-wisps into the forest. Once the trees all start to look the same, which tends to be very quickly, you are doomed. I was only a child when I met him. I was told to retrieve a fishing rod left at the lake earlier that afternoon. Father had already fallen asleep in front of the fire, so I followed the starry pinpricks in the river until I could no longersee our summer cottage in the distance. The river looked so different at night, reflecting fire from above. The deeper I went, the thicker the trees, and the brighter the mist hovering above the water. The air smelled of pine, but that was no relief when I called into the dark and received no answer. Wolves, they said, the forest was filled with wolves at night. Little boys and little girls make good snacks for wolves. I watched the mist in the river, hoping it would tell me something. It looked back at me with yellow-green eyes but did not say a word. But I heard something. "Follow me," it said. "Follow me." They always warned us against faeries, but youth makes one rash. I could see their lights in the distance. Just one glimpse. My task forgotten, I promised myself, if I spotted a faerie, then the night would not have been wasted. I stepped into the river.
Unfortunately, there were no faeries. There was only water - deep water that rose past my knees and past my waist and past my chest and past my neck. Even if I did call out, there would be no one to hear me. Watch for wolves, watch for faeries, watch for sirens. In vain, I filled my lungs with liquid and let the moonlight on the surface fade away.
Luckily, the ears of forest creatures are more fine-tuned than those of men. He heard me and pulled me from the depths. Shrouded in mist and fire himself, he was magnificent, both forever young and forever growing. He had the sort of spirit with no life, no death, ahead or behind him. Even at my age, I could see that. I realized the fire of the wisps were not the spirits of the dead. They were the spirits of trees whom he protected. The wolves were his guards, and they had no need to harm children. The faerie were his subjects, and the sirens his court musicians. As he guided me home, I looked down and counted his hoofed prints in the soft earth. He left me at the edge of our golden field without a word. He had neither anything to say nor any need to say it. Father tells me I should no longer believe in fairy tales, but they are very hard to forget.
You better fullview this. I hope the scanning didn't kill it... Over sixty, maybe even over a hundred hours. Usually, I don't use B pencils that much. This was painful, but a labor of love. I pushed my shading technique pretty much to the limit. The writing above is bad, haha. Thank you all for 10,000 pageviews!
There is so much awesome texture going on in this picture. *__* Woeful: your pencil skills are ridiculous--I can't even imagine being able to achieve this effect in digital media. Absolutely stunning.
insssaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaane because i know how much time you put into this O:

Whha. He's beautiful. Your shading is seriously something else, wow, I'm impressed. (I'm always impressed. Bowled over, even. But hey.) B pencils... I think I'm too much of an OCD freak to even consider it now. I'm thoroughly amazed that you could capture such detail with such soft lead/graphite/youknow.
Those hands are so beautiful. They really stick out, for me, for some reason.
The eyes look a little not-right though, or maybe just the right one. It's a strange angle for it to be at; looks like it's a little squinched in there against his cheek. Ahhh but it's really nothing worth nitpicking about, as this is a fantastic picture Bravo!
The attention you pay to detail makes me want to joygasm on your talent. Does that makes sense? Well, it was a compliment. I love you. xD
