June 2009 - Collab Suggestions?

Journal Entry: Sun Jun 21, 2009, 8:51 PM

EDIT 06.21.09:
Updating because I'm bored, and Basara isn't as good as I'd hoped it to be. :( (Date Masamune, though, you are very pretty.) Anyhow, :iconprodigybombay: and I are doing a collaboration picture for AX, and we want it to be fanart. Do you have suggestions? Try not to make it something that like, one artist could do by themselves. It will be her base sketch, my alterations and shading, her colors and further alterations.

EDIT 06.15.09:
Too much work to do to worry about con seating. Here's a table map. Find me at AX. Buy things from me. I have to recoup my flight. OTL OTL OTL

EDIT 06.07.09: Anyone know people who need housing in Piscataway, by Rutgers? Trying to rent out a house there. If you find someone, we'll give you a $100 referrer's bonus. Contact my mom at marionchan@verizon.net .

:heart::heart::heart:

New month, hopefully things will turn up. I've returned from A-Kon, and it was great fun seeing everyone again as well as meeting new people (some new people whom already heard of me, aha!). Despite a paltry sum of earnings. a lost-sketchbook scare, and plane-flight stomach aches, things worked out in the end. Tomorrow, I return to working at school (teaching assistant position) and then have to hurry up and do my contract work for the Onion.

These past weeks' events have put me quite behind, and I'm still not done with them yet (I type this from a hotel room). So, again, bear with me if I don't respond to things or don't post new things. Thank you everyone for the well-wishes, they're keeping me going in these tough times. I'd say I'm usually one of those pretty level-headed people, but when I crack, I can really go off the deep end. (I sell more by being sensible than by being actually good at art or liking anime, lol!)

Conwise, I've decided there are more important things than churning out fan art prints. No, not that I'm going all-original (seriously, my originals don't sell), I'm just not going to plow through them like last year. I'm going to pay more care towards my fan art and have it represent both my style as well as the series'. And also to do stuff about series I like - things that I actually can bond with fans over (if not as deeply). The success of my Death Note piece has taught me that. In the end, of course, I'll still be an OC-loving commission artist who, believe it or not, can work without reference.

In terms of career, I really need to learn how to go through the concept development process - turnarounds, evolutions of characters, environments. I want a better grasp on composition and color. I will be organizing a concept and three-dimensional portfolio. *nodnod* As an artist, I want to be a "visual problem solver." Not just "draw this idea I had" but "come up with a design that adds to a story I had." Big picture design is a challenge to my very modular, analytical, thinking process. But hey, to try is to learn. I just won't show anyone my failed attempts :D. (Actually, they're all on my sketchblog.)

Enough about my immutable self-and-art philosophy. Now, just some dumb personal stuff:

:iconkorilin: - Happy to share with you as always. Hope that, if you have to save my butt next year, that people will realize we're not the same artist.
:iconneomonki: - Thank you for the sketch! Yes, I really do like waffles.
:iconyanimator: - Pffbt. I'll see you in a month. Crap, didn't get a picture of your socks.
:iconnayuki-chan: - I'll see you in two weeks! Sorry for my late-night business philosophy debates.
:iconblix-it: - If it helps, I'm posting here publicly that I'm not mad at you at all. :DDD Haha, in fact, I'm very happy you gave me the =Audley print.
:iconjyotii: - Lol, did you pick up my stuff? Otherwise, they're going to charge me, I think... Anyway, thanks for being such a help. PS, give me your art style.
:iconbetrayal-and-wisdom: - OHOHO, I can walk to your house now. I will see you Wednesday, Thursday, Friday night because my parents are out of town, and I will be bored. We need to book AX flights.

Sorry to those who I just kind of talked to briefly. I was quite frazzled throughout most of the event. Many of you, though, I hope to see later this summer.
:iconkhiro: :icon021: :iconlunamiel: :iconmarika: :iconmoral-extremist: :iconsleepar: :iconimmp: :iconsypri:

May 2009 - I CAN'T GET A GODDAMN BREAK

Journal Entry: Tue May 26, 2009, 8:00 PM

I bet a lot of you, especially those who travel with me, wonder what's going on.

Shit Happens. To Me. A Lot.

Ugh, so I finally made it home after being sequestered, internet-less at my grandfather's funeral and missing a lot of potential fun and revenue at Anime Boston. Two days before arriving, my grandmother fell down the stairs and broke her arm. I "slept" in a chair in the hospital. Then, the nursing home decided not to take her until Tuesday, meaning we had to go through the trouble of transferring her to our house. To make her more comfortable, we turned the air conditioning on higher than usual. This causes our power grid thing to catch on fire. After calling the fire department, it turns out we no longer have power. Indefinitely. Without electricity, I cannot print my sketchbooks or bake my keychains. In desperation, I go to my mom's work (with a damn toaster over to make keychains!), and it turns out her printer is incompatible with my computer. And the holes I've punched in my keychains are too small for the ball chains I've bought for them - ball chains of which I only have thirty, which I bought in a desperate late night run to AC Moore 15 minutes ago.

I have to somehow get it together and fly to A-Kon tomorrow morning.

I really have no idea how I'm going to do this.

Convention Schedule:

A-Kon - (Dallas, TX. May 29-31), sharing with ~korilin
AnimeNext - (Somerset, NJ. June 12-14), not sharing
Anime Expo - (Los Angeles, CA. July 2-6), not sharing
(Otakon - tentative.)

April 2009 - Artist Alley Issues in 400 Words

Mon Apr 20, 2009, 4:08 PM
   NEWS

EDIT 04.20.09 - As part of my final project in Japanese Popular Culture, I am researching the Artist Alley community here in the United States. I have already taken information from my previous travels as well as closely, statistically, documented one particular event. The final product will be published here on DeviantART - but be warned, it will be long.

If you would like to provide me with information (quotes, experiences, opinions, etc), you can comment bellow, contact me on AIM/MSN, or e-mail me at fongmingyun@gmail.com .

The following is the best I can do to clarify, in writing, the issues that faces this community. I hope, if you are interested in being a con artist (no pun intended), that this short essay gives you insight into what you will encounter.

The Artist Alleys at American anime conventions differ greatly from the Japanese Comiket as well as those at United States' Comic, Science Fiction, and Fantasy conventions. Comiket is filled with doujinshi, amateur comics written by groups of people called "circles." American Comic Alleys have professional artists signing and selling his latest issues they worked on. On the other hand, at anime conventions, most artists are students, some of which have no interest in studying art professionally. Given the differences between each artist community, two major issues have arisen : fanart and crafts.

People are more likely to purchase things they are familiar with. Therefore, people buy fan art. Comiket thrives due to fan-made comics. Most American comic conventions frown on, or even restrict unlicensed fan art. However, many people who come to anime conventions treat the Artists' Alley as a handmade, sometimes cheaper, alternative to the Dealer's Room, where companies sell licensed merchandise. This has led to a "bootleg flea market" atmosphere. Otakon, in Baltimore, Maryland, went through an issue where a handful of artists' fan work actually threatened dealers' profits and caused the con staff to hire lawyers to discuss the issue. Anime North, in Toronto, Ontario, is famous for "lowballing" where artists loudly sell their work less than market average to increase sales. All fan art only exists in a legal gray area of "parody," but if fan art were banned, many artists would not make enough money to support themselves.

However, at anime conventions, the term "fanart" has begun to encompass crafts as well. This broader interpretation of "art" means that more people are competing for the same number of spaces. In 2008, Anime Boston sold out of Alley tables in 34 seconds, and many people complained the system was "unfair." Traditionally, artists have sold prints. However, since shoppers prefer practical items, many people now make dolls, bags, and cosplay accessories. In turn, many illustration artists have delved into a trinket market. Keychains, buttons, stickers, with cute, semi-deformed, "chibi" are consistently popular, and sometimes make more money than printed work. This is especially true in a tough economy where people are unwilling to pay as much for a piece of colored paper. However, in trying to make items cheaper and more practical, the Alley has become more focused on "mass production" and come in direct competition with the Dealer's Room.

I wish I could explain this better, but the issues the Artist Alley has are all intertwined. Explaining one leads to explaining another. However, I hope my attempt at summary makes the situation clearer to those in and out of the anime artist community in America.

PS - I still need a job.

EDIT 04.17.09 - I have received the results of both of my interviews, and neither company will employ me for this summer. Therefore, if anyone wants to take me as an intern for this summer (paid or unpaid), I assure you I'm qualified, maybe even more than you're looking for (resume: [link] ). I am available for work beginning June 1.

Just in case, it looks like it might be a lot of conventions this year, so I really need your suggestions for a) your favorite Pokemon and b) fan art. So far, I kind of want to do Ike from Fire Emblem, Lelouche and Suzaku from Code Geass, the four main characters from D. Grayman, the four main characters from EVA, and Roy Mustang from FMA.

Okay, back to work.
